Abraham Zacuto: Iberian Rabbi and Astronomer in the Age of Discoveries

R. Abraham Zacuto embodied Renaissance ideals while embracing Jewish tradition. A scientist, historian, astronomer, and Talmudic scholar. Zacuto advised Columbus and Vasco da Gama, providing essential tools for their historic voyages, and thereby stood at the gate of the great breakthrough of European civilization: discovery of America, of the Cape of Good Hope, of the seaway to India.  

About the speaker:

Rabbi Dr. Shlomo Pereira is the director of adult education at the  Chabad of Virginia, Richmond. He can be reached at shlomo@chabadofva.org. Rabbi Pereira was a Professor of Economics and has Rabbinical ordination. He is the author or co-author of "Jewish Ethics from Portugal" and other books. He is widely published and lectures around the world on history of Jews from the Iberian Peninsula and the Sephardic World.
